چکیده

Patients diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disorder amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS; also known as Lou Gehrig disease) frequently develop dissociated atrophy of the lateral intrinsic hand muscles (figure, A). Preferential wasting of abductor pollicis brevis and first dorsal interosseous muscles, with relative preservation of the lateral abductor digit minimi, is termed the ALS split hand. Differential cortical representation of these muscles, linked to the evolution of an opposable thumb, is one postulated explanation.

Lou Gehrig, rawhide, and 1938.

Lou Gehrig was one of the most talented baseball players of all time; yet he is also remembered for ALS, the disease that took his life and still bears his name as its eponym. There is speculation about when his symptoms began. Some authorities believe that Gehrig showed signs of ALS when he starred in the film Rawhide in January 1938, which would mean that he played the entire 1938 season with...

Fas(t) Balls and Lou Gehrig Disease A Clue to Selective Vulnerability of Motor Neurons?

The molecular basis of the selective death of motor neurons in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been an enigma since its description by Charcot in 1869. In this issue of Neuron, demonstrate a motor neuron-specific death pathway which involves Fas and NO. Remarkably, motor neurons from mice carrying ALS-linked mutant forms of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) exhibit an increased sensitivity ...

Oregon Health Trends, Series No. 53, August 1999

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatal disorder often overlooked by the public; nonetheless, during 1997 it killed twice as many Oregonians (78) as did sudden infant death syndrome (36), a more widely known disorder. The ageadjusted death rate1 for this disease has long been higher for Oregon than for the U.S., and during 1993-1996 ranked second highest na...

Utility of dissociated intrinsic hand muscle atrophy in the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The split hand phenomenon refers to predominant wasting of thenar muscles and is an early and specific feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A novel split hand index (SI) was developed to quantify the split hand phenomenon, and its diagnostic utility was assessed in ALS patients. The split hand index was derived by dividing the product of the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) am...
